What researchers are building with Ambee data

From elite sports performance to personalized health apps, researchers and educators across the world are using Ambee's climate intelligence to produce work that matters.

Manchester Metropolitan University

Preparing elite football clubs for global tournaments

Dr. Naomi Datson, Senior Lecturer in Applied Sport and Performance, used five years of Ambee's environmental data to map international match venues against a club's competition schedule. Temperature, humidity, air quality, precipitation, and pollen counts were analyzed to anticipate conditions weeks in advance, giving coaches a foundation for training decisions and acclimatization planning.

It's important to see the averages, but also the potential maximums, because that's what preparation is really built around. When we compared it to London, it gave the players context. They could immediately understand whether it would feel similar or much tougher.

Putting climate data in students' hands

Professor Clabaut assigned his students an open brief: build a mobile application that helps real people. With Ambee's APIs, students across all skill levels were able to access structured, live environmental data and build applications that connected creativity with climate reality.

It was easy to use and covered everything we needed in one place. There wasn't a lot of ready-made code available online, which made it even more valuable as a learning experience.

A personalized environmental health app

Four students built Lumee, a weather application that answers natural-language health queries in real time. The app maps Ambee's species-level pollen counts, air quality indices, and weather conditions to individual user locations, delivering recommendations tailored to allergies, asthma, and other environmental sensitivities.

I especially liked that the pollen data were not aggregated. It was divided into trees, weeds, and grasses. That structure made it more versatile for different use cases. Even though we used combined data in our prototype, the detailed version will help us build truly personalized experiences.

Why choose Ambee

Data best suited for research

Most public datasets are broad, sparse, or difficult to integrate. Ambee's environmental data is designed to meet the standards that researchers and student developers actually need.

Climate data continuous time series

Hyperlocal granularity

Ambee data is mappable to any lat/lon, postal code/ZIP code or custom boundary giving research the spatial precision needed for powerful analysis rather than broad regional averages.

Climate data hyperlocal resolution

Deep historical records

Access over 30 years of environmental history, allowing studies to identify long-term trends, seasonal patterns, and anomalies that short-term data cannot reveal.

Improve seasonal category planning

Validated and standardized

All data is cross-checked against ground-based stations, satellite records, and international quality standards, so research outputs stand up to scientific scrutiny.

Optimize campaign timing

Latest and forecast data

Current conditions and forward-looking forecasts are in a single consistent schema, so projects can model both past patterns and anticipated environmental events.

Eligibility and available data

The Ambee for academia program is open to individuals and institutions engaged in non-commercial environmental research and learning.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students

Doctoral researchers and postdoctoral fellows

Research-focused NGOs and nonprofits

Faculty members and academic staff

Accredited academic institutions

The program is for non-commercial academic use only. Projects that transition to commercial applications will need to move to a standard plan. All data products are available through the program, with present, historical, and forecast endpoints included.

Getting access takes three steps

The process is straightforward. Submit your project details, receive a decision, and start building with real environmental data.

01

Apply

Submit your application with a brief description of your project, institution, and the data products you need. No lengthy proposal required.

02

Review

The Ambee team reviews your eligibility and project scope. Most applications receive a decision within a few business days.

03

Access

Once approved, you receive API credentials and can start querying real environmental data for your research immediately.

What we ask in return

Three simple commitments

In exchange for academic access, we ask only that you help us understand the impact the data creates.

Acknowledgment

Cite Ambee as a data source in any published work, paper, or project presentation that uses our data.

Permission to share

Allow us to feature your published work as a case study on the Ambee website, with your approval before anything goes live.

Feedback

Share a brief testimonial about your experience. This helps other researchers understand what is possible with environmental data.
